(Chicopee, MA) On Monday, March 03, 2008 Congressman Richard Neal spoke to Ms. Davis’s fifth grade class at Litwin School in Chicopee, about business, the economy, the role of government and the importance of getting involved. Congressman Neal was invited to speak to the class by Mitch Kuzdzal, Ms. Davis’s Junior Achievement volunteer.

Congressman Neal spoke to the students during Mr. Kuzdzal’s Our Nation, JA program. Our Nation examines how businesses operate in the United States and explores various economic issues that impact those businesses.  The children asked about issues such as NAFTA and what the government and Congressman Neal are doing to help stimulate the economy. The children had studied the different branches of the government and were very interested in how Congressman Neal helps the people in his district with his work in Washington.  After a brief introduction, Congressman Neal took questions from the students, the teacher and the principal. He spent over an hour with the students and then took the time to view some of the Science Projects.

Congressman Neal has spoken to Mr. Kuzdzal’s JA classes in the past and enjoys being asked to talk with the children about economic issues that impact them and their families. Congressman Neal noted, “Junior Achievement is vital to teaching our young people about economics.” Ms. Davis noted that, “I love having Mr. Kuzdzal teach JA in my class, as a teacher it helps me teach the economics frameworks the children need to be successful. Mr. Kuzdzal brings in so many speakers and adds so much to our learning.”

Congressman Neal also took the opportunity to present Mitch Kuzdzal with a letter from President George W. Bush and a plaque from the Points of Light Foundation in recognition of being the Daily Point of Light on Jan. 3, 2008. Mr. Kuzdzal, a retired Chicopee educator, is a longtime JA volunteer who works tirelessly to teach children about business, economics and the importance of staying in school.
