The Center for Human Development

Welcome to CHD

The Center for Human Development, Inc. (CHD) was founded in 1972 on a philosophy of helping people in the community, a major departure from the prevailing system of placing people in institutions. Over thirty-six years later, the dedicated staff of CHD are still on the road, providing vital support to needy children, people with psychiatric and developmental disabilities, the elderly and the homeless.

Our Mission

The CENTER FOR HUMAN DEVELOPMENT (CHD) provides a broad range of high quality, community-oriented human services dedicated to promoting, enhancing and protecting the dignity and welfare of people in need.

The Center for Human Development serves more than 4,000 children, adults and families in Massachusetts and Connecticut with 800 caring human service professionals in 45 programs. CHD has been serving the most vulnerable people in our region for over 30 years. CHD is also a leader in community initiatives for violence prevention in schools and neighborhoods, and provides mediation and training to families, schools and community organizations.

CHD's programs include clinical and outreach therapeutic services, crisis assessment and stabilization, emergency and long term foster care, shelter and supportive services to the homeless, and community-based residential, supported housing, day treatment and vocational programs. All these services work to support vulnerable people as members of their communities, and to avoid institutional or restrictive environments whenever possible.
