Teacher Roles
A good working relationship is the key ingredient to the success of all Junior Achievement programs. We suggest the teacher and volunteer form a partnership to enable students to receive the maximum benefits of our programs.
Before the First Lesson
- Return volunteer phone calls or email promptly.
- Plan class observation visit or planning session.
- Discuss school and classroom management rules, student characteristics/specials needs.
During Class
- A licensed school professional MUST remain in the classroom at all times.
- Introduce the volunteer to the students each visit.
- Volunteer will need magnets or tape to display posters.
Be an active partner with your JA volunteer
- Act as a bridge between students and volunteer
- Maintain discipline and order in the classroom
- Help to keep the discussion on track
- Interpret unclear communications between the volunteer and students
- Assist with activities/grouping
- Notify volunteer of changes to schedule
- Reaffirm next class visit
- Evaluate progress and reporting any problems to JA staff
Hints for a Successful Partnership
- Share resource ideas and activities that worked well in other classes
- Evaluate constructively the volunteer's presentations, and give support and encouragement.
- Notify volunteer of school conflicts (school delays, closings, field trips, assemblies, etc.)
- At the end of each lesson in the "Guide for Volunteers and Teachers" are Interdisciplinary Activities for you to use with the students.
- Thank the volunteer. Encourage the students to write thank you letters at the end of the program, have the students sign the JA banner and present it to the volunteer on the last visit, or take a photo of the kids with the volunteer and present it to the volunteer on the last visit.
